While my first instinct, as I am sure all of you will think to, is to make a stat system to go along side progression. However, this makes things a lot more complicated and I cannot think of a seamless way to integrate that with everything else. Instead, I would like to provide the combat numbers such as speed and damage with the items/abilities. Something like running speed can be a flat stat that can then be modified with items/abilities/race bonuses/class bonuses/ect. Missile spells can have speeds and damages and so on. There can be various modifiers that can replace normal stat based progression. My philosophy on design is to keep things as simple as possible and complexity will naturally come about through building the system.
